The town was transformed during World War II when Henry J. Kaiser built one of only two steel mills located west of the Mississippi. Arguably the biggest influence on Fontana's local economy is the Auto Club Speedway. The race course brings tens of thousands of fans to the area for a few days each year which has a big impact on the local hospitality industry.
